Guest speaker Dr. David Echelbarger, associate professor of philosophy at the University of Mary in North Dakota, is hosting a lecture about "Instilling a love of leisure in an age of apathy" at Alaska Pacific University (APU) on Wednesday, April 10. This is part of the APU guest lecture series. The lecture will be in room 221 of the Carr-Gottstein building on APU's campus from 6-7 p.m.
More details about lecture: The virtues, especially the virtue of justice, draw us into right relation with ourselves because that they allow us to act and be in a way that is consistent with our own flourishing, our neighbors, and God. On the other hand, the vices, especially the vice of apathy, or acedia, separate us from ourselves, our neighbors, and God.
Drawing from St. Thomas Aquinas's thought on the capital vices, Dr. David Echelbarger will articulate the essential characteristics of apathy, its deleterious effects, and the place of leisure in overcoming this bad habit.
